ECAM Lyon Makes Its Web University Entrance

With its extensive expertise in Lean Management, ECAM has just contributed to the creation of two online modules in partnership with BPI France Université.

ECAM presented themes from the School’s Operational Excellence pedagogy :  the human at the heart of a company’s transformation system, the importance of managerial approaches, and the purpose of tools.

The discovery module,“LEAN, where do we start?,” presented by Jean Louis Arosio, head of the Continuous Improvement Manager Master’s Program, is an introduction to Lean management and ECAM’s specific approach.

The in-depth module, “From Lean Management to the learning company,” focuses on the research of Zahir Messaoudene, professor-researcher in continuous improvement; he discusses team accountability and learning through problem resolution.

This digital pedagogical program makes up an introduction to the face-to-face training programs offered by ECAM Expert, in the school’s on-campus factory, INEXO.

Finals for the Campus Création Competition

2017 presents a historic year for ECAM Lyon as they have qualified for the final round in several categories for the regional innovation competition, Campus Création. Next May 4th, the school’s student-engineers will defend their GPS tracking device for hikers project that they developed in the context of Practical Work requirements.

The Competition

Each year, the Campus Création competition brings university students from the Rhône-Alpes region together into multidisciplinary teams. The objective is to introduce them to entrepreneurship by creating fictional companies. For 6 months, the students are asked to create, imagine, and develop this project. Each team must defend their work in front of a professional jury, who will vote for the best work in each category.

Starting in their first year as a student-engineer, ECAM Lyon gives its students guidance in their entrepreneurial undertakings, whether it be through competitions or academic courses. The school allows students to develop their projects from the first idea to the final product; ECAM is happy to have guided its team this year in the Campus Création competition

The BSafe Project

During their fourth year, all student-engineers in the ECAM Arts et Métiers program complete an innovation project in teams: The Léonard Project. This year, one of the teams wanted to participate in the Campus Création Competition. The four team members got together with 2 student-designers from the Martinière and decided to represent BSafe. This company has developed a mobile application that lets hikers—or any person who feels in danger—give their geographical location to their friends and family. Using this idea, the student team made a simple observation: cell phones have limited autonomy. To ensure fully the users’ security, they invented a GPS tracking device with an autonomous energy source, that, with the simple push of a button, permits hikers to send a distress signal from their GPS location to emergency services. This device also includes a back-up emergency battery, charged by the hikers’ movements, so that they can alert their family and friends at any time.

ECAM Lyon Makes Finals in the Parcours Campus Category

After presenting their project in front of a jury on April 13th, the BSafe team was chosen as one of 12 finalists out of almost one hundred participating teams. Thomas Damart, a 4th-year student in the ECAM Arts et Métiers program is very proud of this competition:

“We chose to participate in the Campus Création adventure because it gave us a great chance to learn about, without risking anything, the entrepreneurial world.  We would like to thank all the people who helped us with this project: Thibault Champigny and Yoann Poulet (students in ECAM Arts & Métiers), Mr. Dominique Hubert, Ms. Christine Billon-Lanfray, and Ms. Pellisson (professor at the Martinière). On behalf of our group, we are very proud to be the first team to represent the school in the final competition.”

 

Companies : Behind the Scenes

Volvo, RTE, Amazon, Hermès…every year, companies open their doors to ECAM student-engineers. These visits provide them with the opportunity to learn about different engineering sectors in new ways and bring them face to face with the key issues confronting industrial and commercial groups. A much-appreciated visit!

In addition to these immersive visits, companies can also meet students at events such as thematic meetings helping students learn about a particular field, jobs/internships/job dating…

The Fest’Innov, the innovation challenge, also provides a great lever for exchanges between the industrial world and the students: for 24 hours, more than 250 students work on innovation projects that come directly from companies. Don’t miss the next edition of Fest’Innov that will take place on October 12-13, 2017 on ECAM Lyon’s campus.

 

 

4L Trophy 2017 : excellent start for 6 ECAM teams

 On Tuesday, February 14th, 6 teams took off for the famous student race : the 4L Trophy.

Mixing athletic challenge with a change of scenery and solidarity, the mythic race attracts over 2, 200 students each year who come ready to cross the Moroccan desert exclusively on a Renault 4L. We interviewed Charles Elloy, a 4th-year student in ECAM Arts et Métiers, president of the ECAM 4L Trophy club, and 2017 participant.

Why did you want to do this race ?

Stories from my friends who already did the race made me want to tackle the adventure myself. It’s a unique experience, both on a human, athletic level but also on a professional level. A lot of things are discovered that can’t be learned in a classroom like finding sponsors, technical and mechanical knowledge…

How to prepare for such an adventure ?

We started working on it in August 2016. We had first to find a car that was either drivable or had a good-quality motor and sound chassis. Then we had to prepare it mechanically. We were lucky to find a mechanic for our sponsors who did the car’s technical preparation and taught us the basics of mechanics. You can’t invent a mechanic from one day to the next! We also gave a hand with painting the car and adding  all the electronic elements (led headlights, horn, meters, radio…).

The biggest part was finding sponsors, of course. After getting a lot of rejections, we finally raised 7,500 euros.

How will the course proceed ?

We leave the ECAM Lyon campus on February 14th. After a required stop for a technical control, the official take off for the 4L Trophy is Thursday, February 16th at Biarritz. We then must reach the south of Spain at Algeciras and take a boat to Tangier. After that comes the great adventure: with only the help of a compass and a map, we must reach different stages in the Moroccan desert. The official arrival is planned for February 24th at Marrakech. School supplies and registration fees will be provided to the Children of the Desert organization. A great way to combine the practical with fun!

More Students Attracted to Experiences Abroad

While they were only a dozen 10 years ago, 139 ECAM Arts et Métiers student engineers have submitted applications to the International Education Office for a study-abroad year or semester, a figure that reflects this generation’s great inclination to discover the world. After graduation, more than 28% of our young engineers start their career abroad (compared to the average of 18% among engineering schools in France).

Faced with these young people’s growing request, ECAM Lyon makes it a priority to offer them quality partner universities. Today, the school  has 45 partnerships, which are spread over 24 countries and 5 continents.

The pedagogical team is very attentive to the quality of projects that students wish to work on while abroad. The team chooses its candidates based on their academic results, language level, and motivation. The applications accepted by the school are sent to the institution abroad that makes the final decision on admission. At the end of the selection process, 60% of the 2019 class of ECAM Arts et Métiers students will travel for an academic term.

Each student going abroad benefits from the support of an ECAM advising professor for academic questions and supervision by the International Education Office for administrative questions.

Particularity and quality of engineering technology in ECAM engineering

Hussam AltnjiECAM Engineering is a new and innovative program that has been approved for launch in September 2016 by ECAM Lyon. This unique program is the first of its kind in France as it is taught entirely in English and gives students an opportunity to lay a strong academic foundation in a culturally diverse environment.

As ECAM Lyon is recognized for its high performance in industrial and technology education, the ECAM Engineering program will help students in developing the necessary skills to select one of two major disciplines in technology that matches their strengths and interests: robotics at Staffordshire university or industrial design at Politecnico di Torino which are among Europe’s best universities with which ECAM Lyon collaborates. Students will be awarded a dual degree from both ECAM Lyon and the collaborating university.

One of the main areas of focus in “ECAM Engineering” is engineering technology. With an important emphasis on theoretical knowledge, math, physics, mechanics, and design, students get more applied “hands-on experience” in laboratories and coursework. They will be prepared to devote all the applied sciences, including mathematics and engineering fundamentals, to the implementation of technology solutions to solve and analyze engineering problems helping students to develop the most important skills needed in the fourth year of study for the two disciplines. They also improve their research skills by developing innovative engineering projects in their final year of study.

During the first three years students acquire fundamental knowledge of technical design, such as mechanism design and analysis, technological functions, Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T), Computer Aided Design (CAD), etc. Then, theoretical mechanical design developments are completed by experiential learning activities in support of manufacturing engineering and technology. The students apply and analyze existing technologies with hands-on experience by providing the fundamentals of manufacturing processes, instrumentation, metrology, Computer Numerical Control (CNC), and other technical skills. They also develop these technical implementations for the benefit of humanity by reflecting ethical values for technology research and development. Meanwhile, students develop their multidisciplinary skills through exciting and interactive projects with other engineering branches like mechanics or physics, allowing them to effectively integrate into engineering teams in the industry.

Therefore, the quality of our developed program will prepare graduates for engineering technology. The program is reinforced with experiential learning designed especially to enhance the theoretical background and stimulate innovation.

A new 3D printer goes along with innovation

The 3D Printer park at ECAM is growing: the school just received a new Raise 3D printer that will facilitate innovation projects for students, teachers, clubs, and entrepreneurs. Particularly easy to use, this printer can print pieces for a low price, often with the undercut structures that only this kind of technology can produce. This machine will be integrated into the ECAM Factory’s technological platform .

Among the first productions include a mount for the ECAM Aeronautic Club’s drone and a prototype of a braille tablet for the PRD (the Student Research and Development Project). This new 3D printer offers a multitude of functions and can use different materials (ex : PLA, ABS, PC, flexible materials…).

After a guided testing phase, the students will work this 3D printer on their own as part of their  program.

Welcome of Chinese high school students on campus

Dedicated to a strong policy of globalizing its classes, ECAM Lyon recently integrated a consortium of prestigious French universities ((ESIGELEC Rouen, EIGSI La Rochelle, NEOMA Business School Rouen & Reims) to help recruit young Chinese students. In addition to a solid linguistic and scientific education in China—given in French—, followed by time spent in France before attending one of these 4 universities, the Chinese high school students enrolled in this program come to France for a sophomore or junior year to discover our country and the schools in the consortium.

As participants of the consortium’s program, ECAM Lyon hosted 65 young Chinese students from Nanhai (Guangzhou) and Guangming (Shanghai) high schools in January 2017. The program included a visit of the campus and its laboratories, course immersion, exchanges with ECAM student-engineers, and exploring Lyon.

Almost 10 of these high schoolers will attend ECAM Lyon in September 2017 to pursue one of our 5-year programs: ECAM Arts et Métiers or ECAM Engineering.

3 Questions for Maria Soledad Commissio, Teacher-Researcher in ECAM Engineering Program

Maria Soledad Commissio joined the teaching team at ECAM Lyon in September 2016. Originally from Argentina, she holds a doctorate in Mechanics and teaches mechanics, chemistry and materials science to the brand-new ECAM Engineering class, whose students complete their degree program entirely in English. She also pursues her research at LabECAM with the Materials and Structures Group.  

 

You’ve traveled throughout the world for your studies and career. Tell us about your journey.

I’m originally from Argentina, where I studied engineering at the National University of Mar Del Plate. Afterwards, I received a PhD in industrial engineering at the University of Seville in Spain and then went on to Insa in Lyon to complete my postdoc. My research allowed me to pursue internships in biomechanics in Australia and Japan—very enriching experiences! Since September I’ve given mechanics, chemistry and materials science courses to the brand-new ECAM Engineering class that debuted this fall.

You easily juggle English, Spanish, and French. In your opinion, are there enough foreign-language courses provided in engineering studies?

An engineering degree program completed entirely in English makes its students considerable assets when entering the job market. English levels should indeed be improved in French higher education because companies require young graduates with linguistic fluency. In the ECAM Engineering program, both students and professors are of different nationalities, which allows for great diversity and a unique teaching environment.

What would like to convey to your future students?

It’s interesting to observe the different pedagogical approaches among my Chinese, French, or Syrian teaching colleagues. In Argentina, students and their professors are very close and I’ve discovered a similar availability and willingness to support students at ECAM Lyon. Also, my research in the mechanical characterization of materials is always pushing me to innovate and stay connected to the latest advances in my field…and, as such, to update constantly my teaching. The student-engineers are the first to benefit.
